Oliver- In response to your comment about a book being in the future AND idea of Art Cards with a theme…. what about “L.A. Life”? Have you considered approaching the California Heritage Museum as a venue? http://web.mac.com/calmuseum/Site/Home.html

Women Painters West supports one school a year with art supplies etc… maybe LA-artist could adopt a school as well? Some schools have museums on site, for instance Santa Monica High.. has the Roberts Art Gallery http://www.samohi.smmusd.org/roberts/

I applaud your organization and efforts to bring art expression to all.

Mara: Thanks for the suggestions, I’ll investigate the California Heritage Museum and I love the adopt a school idea.

Also.. I think “L.A. Life” is perfect for a theme. It keeps the project inclusive yet directed. I’ll run your idea past the group at our next meeting.

Thanks again for you support and if you’re in North East L.A. over the holiday make sure you visit ArtCard @ Avenue 50 Studio.

I think this is a great service for people who want to get their art and ideas out in a creative way and be part of a larger artistic community.

Ryan, Your ArtCards arrived today. They’re incredible! You will be sent a publishing notification once they are on the site. Also, they will be on exhibition over the holidays @ Avenue 50 Studio in HIghland Park. The details are @ http://www.la-artist.com/events/ :)

From the first I heard of this LA-artist project the idea of expanding and extending Ray Johnson’s mail art theme to a new audience caught my attention. Art is a language that anyone can participate in. By sending it in without a jury we have a rich array of expressions. What about making a book (blurb, or other on-line self publishing vendor) and offering it for sale? The history of LA County….

Mara, a book is a great idea and it’s something we’re going to work on in 2012. I’m going to officially announce it at the start of next year.

Also.. we have been approached about creating ArtCards with a theme. Do you think it’s a good idea? I personally like ArtCard because of it’s inclusivity and think giving people freedom to create whatever they wish is one of the projects strengths.

I just heard about Artcards a few weeks ago and I’m excited to be a part of this project. I create my own artwork for family and friends, creating birthday cards and also do larger works. My dad, who is now 87 and suffers from dimentia, is my inspiration for all my artwork. He was for over 60 years an artist, doing what is called “narrative painting”, was a graphic artist for twenty years, in the promotional dept. of Bechtel Corp. and started his career in the 1940′s, in NYC, doing illustrations for pulp SF magazine stories. I don’t have any formal art training. Its very hard to get your artwork out there for people to see. Most galleries won’t show your artwork unless you come up with a sustantial amount of money. This project is a unique place where you can share you artwork with others. Thank You for creating this site.

I love this project – it provides a creative outlet for people who otherwise might not feel they have one and that’s truly what I like most about it. At the same time, I think it’s important to make the exposure to art as broad and widespread as possible. As the project moves forward, it would be great to see more exhibits in non-traditional places; places where people don’t necessarily have to seek it out, but instead just find it at the dry cleaners or the doctor’s office or where-ever. That’s one thing that’s been so nice about the exhibit at the Dana Library – many people just happened upon it.

Jennifer, I love your idea. I think displaying the ArtCards in non-traditional venus will give a wider demographic exposure to the project and the County’s art. If you have any idea or leads for venues please let us know. Also… thank you for inviting us to Dana Community Library in Long Beach. It’s great to know we have support in Long Beach and we’re already looking forward to working with you again next year! :)

I really love the Art Card site. I have been able to share my art with the people I know. I just donated a piece to charity for a silent auction. I am hoping to enter a few more pieces for everyone to see.

This is my first year participating in the Art Card show and I think its great. It allows any creative artist in Los Angeles or surrounding areas to be a part of a show. I also appreciate the open-ness of art allowed. Seeing communities come together through art is awesome. I look forward to participating next year and the years to come.
    Regards,
    Sammy

Hello, Oliver, I created an event on My Facebook Page, have added times at will, may you please share the opening and closing times for the 50 Avenue Annex Gallery Exhibition?

  • Alex

I love the fact that any one can be part of this project, you don’t have to have dope skills to participate , and this is a really cool way to start expressing what each individual feels.

Also the fact that the art-cards are display in different places so people can see them . I think that’s awesome!

    • Valerie

Will you have an exhibit in the west end of San Fernando Valley? I want my students to participate, but know that most parents will not drive to Long Beach or downtown LA for their budding artists to see the exhibit. Please let me know when you will have a venue in West Hills, Woodland Hills, Canoga Park, or Reseda. Thanks so much for such a wonderful opportunity and outlet for creativity.

        Hey Valerie,

The idea is to exhibit the ArtCard collection all over L.A. County. If there’s a library or other public space in your community that would like to host the collection please let me know.

Also.. Our goal moving into 2012 is to start working with youth groups to curate neighborhood ArtCard campaigns and exhibitions. The idea is to give youth an opportunity to run a campaign in their own community with the goal of publishing a book and organizing a show.

The idea is still in development but we’re talking with an origination in Hollywood about piloting the program. Do you think youth in your community would be interested?

What do I think of the Art Card project?
    I love it.
In a weird way, I love it in opposition to certain things I can’t stand:
#1 Art world exclusivity/snobbery. In the “art world” this is rampant and bullshit/fakeness is completely out of control. So many people don’t even know what they like; just what’s the cool thing of the moment. They’ll spend many, many thousands on something they don’t even understand just because the artist happens to have a name… or perhaps a shrewd agent.

I think LA-Artist weeds out those people who feel the need to keep themselves in the company of others who they feel have achieved a certain level of acceptance/commercial success. If some fancy or trendy gallery owner out there chooses my work for a show, I’ll be happy and won’t turn down the oppportunity, but honestly, I prefer the weird and wonderful world of the art card artist collective!

And I love being in the company of artists from such a wide range of ages and places.

    Why did you start ArtCard?

    • https://plus.google.com/110349411074569261007/posts?hl=en Oliver

      Hey ESP,
We started it because we thought it was a cool idea. Also… because the majority of people in LA County have limited access to the arts. Creative participation is a privilege in this country, we believe it should be a right!

I love the project. I get really excited about projects like these that are inclusive and some what curated. This is the type of project that brings pride to community, engagement of all ages and levels of expression. I also appreciate what the body of the cards reflects in a given community; it’s flavor, it’s politics, it’s social well being.

Wonderful work — I just discovered this project a month ago, and am loving it. Can’t wait to see how it will evolve.
